Unauthorised construction around five centrally protected monuments (CPMs) in West Jaiñtia Hills district has been prohibited as per the Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Sites and Remains (AMASR) Act 1958.
The five CPMs in the district are Megalithic Bridge at Amlarem, Megalithic Bridge known as Thlu-um-wi at Mupyut, U-Mawthoh-dur-briew at Nartiang, Megalithic Bridge Syndai and A Tank at Syndai.
An official press release today said that as per the act, any construction activity or alteration to the protected area around ancient monuments is not allowed without the approval of the National Monuments Authority (NMA).
The act prohibits construction within a 100- meters radius of protected monuments and a regulated area extends up to 200 meters beyond that. The NMA under the Ministry of Culture has issued guidelines to be complied with when issuing NOC or granting building permits in the prohibited or regulated areas of Centrally Protected Monuments (CPMs), the release said.
