Villagers of Umlaper are facing the problem of garbage menace as they alleged that those residing in the premises of Amrit Cement Company have haphazardly dumping wastes in vacant area and paid no heed to several pleas made by the village elders.
Chairman of Umlaper Poila Pdang said the village has time and again asked the company to ensure cleanliness is maintained as this will affect the health of the people, but to no avail.
He said a meeting was also held at the deputy commissioner’s office between the representatives of the company, village leaders and government officials, in which the cement company assured that the garbage would be lifted. But this never happened, he added.
Not just about waste that the village is upset about. Pdang said that he had urged the company to give employment to locals but this matter has been left pending for long. Another is shifting of the village at a safe distance away from the company, but this never materialised, he said.
He also criticised the company for charging money to patients who go and get treated at its dispensary. Pdang said other cement companies through its CSR are providing free medical help to villagers.
Hynñiewtrep Youth Council, District President Preios Pale said the company must meet the demands made by the village.
