Aimed at maintaining the cleanliness of Umiam River and to stop the dumping of waste into the river, eight women’s self-help groups supported by the Umiam Auto Rickshaw Drivers Association organized a cleaning drive yesterday.
On the same day, the women’s groups and drivers also cleaned the highway from Umiam Bridge to Umiam Police Station to create awareness among the villagers and passersby on the importance of cleanliness. The cleaning drive was also supported by the Dorbar Shnong of Umiam village, led by Twinkle Buhphang, the local headman.
“From now on, the Dorbar Shnong for the time being will not allow the entry of tourists to Umiam River under the jurisdiction of Umiam village,” Buhphang said, adding that the Dorbar Shnong and SHGs will clean all littered in the river and the Dorbar Shnong will constitute a committee to be headed by SHGs for maintain the river.
