The Deputy Commissioner of Ri-Bhoi has informed that the National Green Tribunal (NGT) has issued an order with hefty penalties for violation of noise pollution norms proposed by the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB).
According to a press communiqué, violation of noise pollution rules include use of loud speakers or a public address system without obtaining written permission from the authorities, use of loud speaker or public address system or any sound amplifier at night except in close premises for communication such as auditoriums, community halls, banquet halls or during a public emergency.
The order also includes prohibition of playing any music, beating a drum, blowing a horn or trumpet or exhibits any musical or other performances of nature to attract crowds in any place covered under the silence zone/area.
In addition to the order issued, sound emitting construction equipment or bursting fire crackers are not allowed at night. Any violation shall be penalised with a heavy fine besides seizure of equipment.
