Nongpoh, Oct 16: Nongpoh MLA Mayralborn Syiem and Umsning MLA Celestine Lyngdoh, along with Ri-Bhoi Deputy Commissioner Abhishek Saini, district officials, representatives of the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corp Ltd (NHIDCL) and members of the Nongpoh Town Committee, held a meeting here today to discuss proposals for constructing additional foot overbridges at key locations along the National Highway in the Nongpoh and Umsning areas.
The meeting focused on improving public safety and facilitating safer movement for pedestrians along the highway. Speaking to the media after the meeting, both MLAs said there was a need to carefully assess development requirements and identify additional locations where footbridges could be constructed, apart from those already planned. They also stressed the need to expedite the completion of the proposed footbridges.
Several other infrastructure and public safety issues were discussed during the meeting, including measures to address waterlogging, cleaning and maintenance of roadside drains, installation of streetlights along the highway, and extension of the service road.
The meeting also discussed extending the existing service road, which currently ends at Mawdiangum, up to Mawtnum to improve connectivity and convenience for residents.
To assess the feasibility of the proposed works and ensure proper planning, it was decided that a joint inspection would be conducted on October 19. The inspection will examine the ground situation and identify necessary improvements to enhance road safety and infrastructure along the National Highway.
