The UDP has clarified that it was not part of the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA).
This was stated by UDP general secretary Jemino Mawthoh today.
His statement came in the backdrop of the NDA meeting in New Delhi today in which parties aligned with the NDA attended. NPP national president Conrad Sangma was among those in attendance.
“I want to make it clear that UDP has nothing to do with NDA. We are not even the alliance partner of NDA,” Mawthoh said in a statement issued to media persons.
“The ideology of the regional parties is totally different from the ideology of the NDA,” he added.
However, Mawthoh informed that in the past, UDP was a member of the North East Democratic Alliance (NEDA).
According to him, UDP had once attended a meeting of NEDA to discuss developmental issues of the North East region.
It may be mentioned that UDP and NPP had attended the first meeting of the NEDA convened by BJP leader Himanta Biswa Sarma in Guwahati in June 2016.
NEDA was formed on May 24, 2016 by the BJP and supported by other regional parties in line with the NDA.
However, the UDP on February 10, 2019 announced its decision to pull out of the NEDA after the BJP was determined to implement the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill 2016.
