In an effort to ensure peace and harmony in the Block 2 border area, the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) and Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC) made a joint visit to Ummat village in the Raid Nongtung area.
The KHADC delegation was led by Chief Executive Member Pyniaid Sing Syiem. The visit aimed to connect with the residents and prioritise their well-being following the formation of the new executive committee in the KHADC.
Syiem was warmly welcomed by Avijit Kro, the Member of the Autonomous Council (MAC) from the KAAC.
The delegation convened at Ummat village before proceeding to inspect the Mawbah ki 12 Kur of Raid Nongtung, the sacred sites where rituals and ceremonies are performed after the cremated remains of deceased individuals are laid to rest.
Among the KHADC team were Deputy CEM Pynshngaiñ N Syiem, Chairman Lamphrang Blah, Deputy Chairman Charles Marngar, and executive members Rangkynsai Kharbuki and Teibor Pathaw.
The local leaders from various villages were also present during the inspection.
Expressing the KHADC’s objective, Syiem emphasised the importance of maintaining peace and preserving the heritage of the area. He acknowledged the responsibility of the district council to safeguard the land, traditions and culture passed down from ancient times.
In line with this commitment, the KHADC intends to develop a special preservation scheme for Mawbah ki 12 Kur in Raid Nongtung. Syiem urged all community members, particularly the Karbi and Khasi people residing in the area, to actively contribute to the peace-building efforts.
Furthermore, Syiem announced collaborative efforts between the KHADC and KAAC to ensure peace in the region. With the second phase of border talks between Assam and Meghalaya set to commence soon, the KHADC is hopeful for a successful result.
The CEM assured that every suggestion from the people will be carefully considered ahead of the negotiations.
