A three day training programme on ‘Livelihood improvement of hill farmers through scientific livestock based integrated cluster farming’ organised by the Division of Animal and Fishery Sciences, ICAR Research Complex for NEH Region, Umiam concluded at Borkhatsari village (Umling block) in Ri Bhoi district today.
The training programme was held under the Biotech Based Programme for Societal Development funded by Department of Biotechnology (DBT), Ministry of Science and Technology.
Sixty beneficiaries took part in the training programme held with an objective to promote livestock based integrated cluster farming as income generating avenues throughout the year.
The organisers said the integrated farming system is an interdependent, interrelated production systems based on few crops, animals and related subsidiary enterprises in such a way so as to maximize the utilization of nutrients of each system and minimize the negative effect of these enterprises on environment.
Based on the concept that ‘there is no waste’ and ‘waste is only a misplaced resource’ which become valuable material for another product, a statement said the system will help poor small farmers, who have very small land holding for crop production and a few heads of livestock to diversify farm production.
Inputs in the form of veterinary medicines, vermibeds, extension folders and others were also distributed among the beneficiaries.
