The Meghalaya High Court will soon give its verdict on the pending writ appeals related to Them Ïew Mawlong.
The division bench of Chief Justice Sanjib Banerjee and Justice B Bhattacharjee will conduct the final hearing on the matter on October 3.
The High Court made its announcement today while hearing the contentious issue which has dragged on in the court since 2018.
“Since the matter has been lingering for a considerable period of time and a further adjournment is sought on behalf of the residents, let the matter appear on October 3, 2023 for the appeals to be finally heard out,” the High Court said in its order passed today.
According to the court, despite affording the State government and the Harijan Panchayat Committee considerable time for a negotiated settlement, “no settlement has been forthcoming”.
During today’s hearing, the State government informed the High Court that following the request by the residents of Them Ïew Mawlong, the government has increased the extent of allocation and even the individual plot sizes.
The State government also told the court that there has been no response from the residents on the decision to increase the extent of allocation and the individual plot sizes.
However, the residents claim that the proposal regarding increase of the extent of allocation or the plot sizes has not been forwarded to them.
Their lawyer R Khatri said that the residents have approached the Central government on the matter and the Central government is apparently looking into the request sympathetically.
