Editor,
The year has come to an end and we are still alive, we still look forward to better days, because hardly anything has changed since the end of last year to the end of this year. We still have the same Government, we still tolerate the same condition of every public facility, we still try to express what it is we want and don’t want, and in the midst of all this trying to express ourselves, I too want to say what it is that I wish from myself and from my Government and from my faith.
The first thought that comes to mind is that I should be able to accept things as they are, which sadly I have not been able to accept, followed by the thought that my Government shall live upto the promises it made during the campaign trail at the start of the year, which unfortunately it hasn’t, and finally that from my faith that what is hypocritical and mediocre in the typical priest shall be understandable to them and that they will admit that a necessity for the reverse is what is needed, because there has only been bad faith in the year that has passed.
But in the midst of all these negatives, we must not want to accuse anyone, not even those who accuse us, because in all this hodge-podge we still have hope, we still trust in God. And everything that happened, happened for our best. The past has proved this truth to us time and time again. Whatever it may be…the loss of our friends, bad weather or good weather, or anything for that matter; everything has had a profound significance and use precisely for us because we are still alive. Is there any reason then to doubt that the year to come will be any different from the year that has passed, and is there any reason for us to despair?
I think that at the end of the year, that on the night of the 31st December 2023, we should rest content that our own practical and theoretical skills in interpreting and wishing certain events above others has reached a high point and that we should not conceive too high an opinion of our wisdom, because there can be no doubt that from time to time we have been impressed by the wonderful harmony of life in Shillong, a harmony too good for us to dare take all the credit to ourselves.
