The process of testing and commissioning of the newly laid gravity mainline of Greater Shillong Water Supply Scheme (Phase-III) is ongoing.
Informing this in a public notice, Chief Engineer of the Public Health Engineering (PHE) B M Lyndem informed that laying of gravity main of Greater Shillong Water Supply Scheme (Phase-III) is completed.
Stating that since the process of testing and commissioning of the newly laid gravity mainline is ongoing, Lyndem said that during this period, it is anticipated that there may be variations in water quantity and quality such as temporary discolouration etc through the newly laid gravity mainline to Shillong city and its adjoining areas.
“This temporary inconvenience is essential for the commissioning of gravity main of Greater Shillong Water Supply Scheme (Phase-III) and every attempt shall be made to the extent possible to supply clean and reliable water to the public at the earliest. Inconvenience caused is highly regretted,” she said.
The GSWSS (Phase III) aims to solve the water woes faced by the residents of Shillong. The project was approved by the Central government at a cost of Rs 193.50 crore in October 2008 with a completion deadline of May 2011.
The objective of this project was to create infrastructure to provide for the supply of additional 24 million litres of water to the projected population of Shillong Urban Agglomeration from 2011 to 2041.
However, the delay in completing the water supply project due to land hurdles including laying pipes under roads and passing through the defence and private lands has led to escalation of the estimate, with the government sanctioning an additional Rs 65 crore.
