Indus Towers Ltd, a telecom infrastructure company, in association with the Northeast Centre for Equity Action on Integrated Development (NEAID), inaugurated well-equipped and hygienic washroom facilities for girl students in three government schools in Ri-Bhoi and East Khasi Hills.
Complementing the central government’s Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, the newly constructed sanitation infrastructure was opened with a function at Umden Umroi RMSA Secondary School, where cabinet minister Alexander Laloo Hek, Umroi MLA Damanbait Lamare and North East circle CEO of Indus Towers Rajender Singh Gurung were present.
“This initiative is a vital step towards enhancing hygiene, dignity and the overall well-being of our daughters, who frequently face challenges due to inadequate sanitation facilities in schools,” Hek was quoted as saying in a press release today. “I applaud Indus Towers for their commendable efforts in making this possible and encourage ongoing collaboration to extend such improvements to other regions of Meghalaya.”
Alongside constructing hygienic washrooms, the initiative includes comprehensive menstrual hygiene awareness workshops designed to break social taboos and empower students with vital health knowledge.
“Through Indus Towers’ flagship CSR (corporate social responsibility) programme ‘Pragati’, we aim to address critical infrastructure gaps and empower communities. Beyond just infrastructure, this initiative seeks to empower students with dignity, confidence, and a secure environment. By ensuring a clean and safe environment, we strive to foster self-esteem among young learners while building a comprehensive hygiene ecosystem within schools, ultimately benefiting the entire community,” Gurung said.
