Police in East Garo Hills seized a cache of arms and ammunition buried near a tree in Rongjeng.
The recovery includes – one country-made small weapon, two 2-inch live mortar shells, 428 rounds of suspected 7.62 live AK ammunition.
According to East Garo Hills Superintendent of Police, Steve A Rynjah, the recovery was made possible by a special operations police team from Williamnagar, acting on reliable source inputs.
The team searched the Chibilbang village jungle under Rongjeng police station, commencing the operation at 10 pm on January 29 and making the recovery around 1am on January 30.
Police suspect that the seized arms and ammunition may belong to the erstwhile Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA), a banned militant organisation that was active in the region.
