The West Jaintia Hills Deputy Commissioner has directed all street vendors and hawkers to vacate the public footpath and main road of Jowai from January 13.
The DC said this is in view of the regular problems faced by the public and the upcoming Meghalaya Games 2025.
It has been observed that the hawkers and street vendors continue to occupy public footpaths despite several directives issued by the office, the DC said.
The illegal occupation of footpaths has caused significant inconvenience to the general public and pedestrians and disrupted the smooth flow of traffic. Pedestrians are often forced to walk on main roads leading to frequent accidents and heavy congestion of main roads, he said.
