The Commissionerate of Food Safety has warned street food vendors to follow food safety guidelines or face penal action.
Assistant Commissioner of Food Safety DBS Mukhim said street vendors selling edibles in the city are not adhering to the required safety standards laid down by the Food Safety Standards Authority of India (FSSAI).
She informed that at present there are only 1500 street food vendors who have obtained licence from the FSSAI and the office finds it difficult to make these street vendors aware of the need to maintain food standards. “Some vendors are least bothered even if they have to pay the fine,” she said.
Mukhim urged the public to raise complaints if a vendor violates food safety norms with the office. She also noted that street food vendors do not prominently display their licences and urged them to maintain cleanliness in their establishments.
Meanwhile, today the Commissionerate held an awareness programme for distributors, wholesalers and retailers.
