Shillong, Apr 22: A pre-monsoon storm accompanied by heavy rain and hailstones severely affected parts of South Garo Hills.
In two separate incidents on the nights of April 20 and 21, approximately 945 houses in the Chokpot area and 51 houses in the Emangre area were reported damaged. The storm also caused loss of wild birds and animals, officials said.
The District Disaster Management Authority swung into action and clearing of roads and fallen trees has already been done, along with distribution of relief materials to the affected areas. Assessment of damage and further assistance is underway.
Meanwhile, calamity also struck parts of Eastern West Khasi Hills after strong winds caused widespread damage across several villages on Monday. Among the worst affected areas were the villages of Rikhen and Mawkhapkhwa, while nearby villages reported comparatively minor damage.
According to detailed information gathered from the village heads of the two affected villages, the storm hit at around midnight on April 21. The violent weather damaged numerous houses, schools and a place of worship.
The headman of Rikhen reported that more than 20 houses were affected, with at least five houses seriously affected by the storm.
Similarly, the headman of Mawkhapkhwa stated that around 16 houses sustained damage, including one church and one government LP school. Fortunately, no injuries were reported.
