The Meghalaya government will seek retransfer of Block-1 and Block-2 from Assam during the ongoing boundary talks between the two neighbouring states.
Informing this to media persons here today, Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong said that the question of border dispute does not arise for Block-1 and Block-2 which are currently under the administrative control of Assam.
“It’s a matter of re-transferring. Some people misunderstood this. When you talk about Blocks 1 and 2 the question of differences and dispute doesn’t arise. It is only a question of retransferring back those areas on the basis of notification of 1951,” he said after a meeting of the Regional Committee of Ri-Bhoi district.
Tynsong also said that the Meghalaya government has placed before the government of Assam to retransfer the two blocks to Meghalaya especially those areas “where the population is maximum with our own people.”
Tynsong told reporters after a meeting of the Regional Committee of Ri-Bhoi district.
Meghalaya lays claim to Block I and Block II as both areas were transferred from the then United Khasi Jaintia Hills district of Assam in 1951 to the Karbi Anglong district by the then Governor of Assam for administrative convenience.
However, in 1972 when Meghalaya was carved out of Assam, they were not retransferred resulting in claims and counter-claims among the residents.
