The inaugural Haipei Rani Gaidinliu Sports Meet, organised by the Rongmei Phwam Shillong and Rongmei Chamnac Phwam Shillong, commenced today at Divine Saviour Parish Ground in Nongthymmai here.
The event pays tribute to Padma Shri Rani Gaidinliu, a revered freedom fighter and socio-religious leader from the Rongmei Naga tribe.
Present at the opening ceremony was Hannah Kahmei, Director of Tribal Affairs and Hills in the Manipur government.
Over the next two days, participants will engage in a range of sports and traditional indigenous games cherished by the Rongmei Naga community.
Rani Gaidinliu, known for her spirited resistance against colonial rule, was imprisoned multiple times before her eventual release following India’s independence. Her courage and leadership earned her the title “Rani” from Jawaharlal Nehru. This event is held in her memory to celebrate her legacy and inspire future generations.
