The state government has enlisted a specialised agency to clean up the Rongkhon Songgital landfill in Tura and it could be awarded contracts to deal with other locations too, Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma said.
Last week, the CM inspected the installation of a waste segregation machine at Rongkhon Songgital. The machine will separate organic matter, plastics, metal, bricks, stones and other substances from garbage, thereby improving waste reuse and recycling. This process will clear the legacy waste at the Rongkhon Songgital landfill site, the government hopes.
A South Korean company had been tasked with leading a pilot project to turn the waste into energy blocks. However, the CM last week said that this plan had been encountering problems and now the waste will be segregated for selling on, though the biodegradable waste will be converted into compost.
Regarding the timeline, Sangma said that the agency has proposed a shorter timeframe but the government is aiming for significant changes within 12-18 months.
