Special prayers were held in some churches in Meghalaya today for the restoration of peace in strife-torn Manipur.
Responding to a call given by North East India Council of Churches (NEICC) prayers for Manipur were heard in a variety of denominations across the city and beyond today.
Church groups have previously appealed for peace in Manipur but Meghalaya itself has not acquitted itself well so far in looking after the people displaced by the violence who have come to Shillong.
Several hundred people, at least more than 800, have been displaced by the ethnic violence in Manipur and have arrived in Shillong but are staring at a bleak future as no relief and humanitarian support has been extended to them.
Many people in Christian-dominated Meghalaya have been appalled by the wanton destruction in Manipur, including of several churches.
However, Kuki groups have been denied permission to set up a relief camp in Shillong and were also denied permission to rent homes in certain neighbourhoods over fears that the displaced will become permanent settlers.
