Ahead of Christmas and New Year celebrations, the Shillong traffic police warned residents not to indulge in drunk driving.
The cops have also announced vigorous checking drives throughout the city including bypasses, highways and locality roads with immediate effect.
Superintendent of Police (City) Vivek Syiem in a statement said it is imperative for the police to ensure safe driving and reduce road crash casualties and fatalities.
He said the traffic police will focus more on the detection of drunk driving and dangerous driving in addition to other Motor Vehicle Act violations.
“Anyone found to be driving under the influence of alcohol exceeding the permissible limit (30 mg. per 100 ml. of blood) shall be punishable under Section 185 MV Act with a fine of 10,000 or imprisonment which may extend up to 6 months or with both,” he said.
He urged motorists to drive safely and not to drink and drive not only for their own safety but also for the safety of others.
