The Shillong Municipal Board (SMB) has directed all commercial establishments and shops operating within the municipality to stop the distribution, sale and use of single-use plastic items less than 120 microns immediately.
The items include earbuds with plastic sticks, plastic sticks for balloons, plastic flags, candy sticks, ice-cream sticks, polystyrene (Thermocol) for decoration, plates, cups, glasses, cutlery such as forks, spoons, knives, straws, trays, wrappings, and packing films around sweet boxes, invitation cards, cigarette packets, and plastic or PVC banners which are less than 100 microns have been banned.
“Random checking will be conducted and any shop or commercial establishments that continue to use the above-mentioned items shall be penalized and their business license shall be suspended or revoked,” the SMB said.
