The Khun Hynñiewtrep National Awakening Movement (KHNAM) has written to the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council to bring the Shillong Golf Club under the provisions of the United Khasi-Jaintia Hills District (Trading by Non-Tribals) Regulation, 1954.
“It is publicly known that the Shillong Golf Club is operating without a trading license from the district council and now started collecting entry fees from the public, which means trade,” KHNAM leader Thomas Passah said.
Stating that as per the district council rules, the club should posses a trade license and its members and employees should pay professional tax, he said, “It is also shocking that this land has been leased to the club since 1926 and rented on the basis of perpetual lease that can complicate matters relating to ownership of land practiced by the Khasi people.”
Seeking the KHADC’s intervention, the party also suggested that the Shillong Golf Club should be run by self help groups through the dorbar shnong that will also generate employment opportunities to the Khasis.
