The current turmoil that is surrounding the North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU) Shillong campus demonstrates the need for a full-fledged independent central university in Tura, a Garo Hills-based organisation said today.
The United A·chik Socio Economic Justice Forum (UASEJF) said that it has reissued its demand for a separate university following the physical assault on a NEHU Shillong Assistant Professor, allegedly by a student, last week.
Currently, Shillong is the headquarters of NEHU, though a campus has also been set up in Tura where a few courses are offered.
The UASEJF condemned the “barbarity” of the attack on the member of staff and said that in the past Garo students and those from elsewhere have also been made to feel uncomfortable due to the Shillong campus’ “volatile environment”.
The group called for a full investigation into the assault, punishment for the guilty, enhanced safety measures, full-fledged status for NEHU Tura and a “decentralisation” of higher education in the state.
