The Meghalaya Pradesh Mahila Congress has condemned Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma over remarks on women’s employment during Congress rule and demanded public apology.
“The disgraceful and insensitive remarks made by Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma constitute a direct attack on the dignity, respect, and status of women across the region,” State Mahila Congress President Joplyn S Shylla said.
She said Sarma’s statement reflects a deeply misogynistic mindset, unbecoming of someone holding a constitutional position. “His words are an affront to the values of equality, respect, and decency that our democracy upholds,” she added.
The Mahila Congress said at a time when the nation is striving to empower women in every sphere—be it education, leadership, or social justice—such derogatory remarks are a setback to the collective efforts of women across the Northeast and the country.
Demanding an immediate public apology the Mahila Congress has urged the Election Commission and relevant constitutional bodies to take cognizance of the statement and initiate appropriate action and call upon women across political lines to stand united against such demeaning narratives that seek to silence and undermine women.
“We also appeal to the people of Meghalaya and the Northeast to reject such toxic political discourse and stand for dignity, respect, and true leadership,” Shylla said, adding, “Women are not tools for political slander. We are the backbone of society, and we will not be silenced or belittled.”
