Former Mawsynram MLA Himalaya M Shangpliang has supported the resolution taken by the Mawsynram dorbar to prevent Mawjymbuin cave from being used as a place of worship.
Mawjymbuin has become famous among Hindu pilgrims and tourists for its stalagmite that resembles a Shiva lingam. The dorbar has banned prayers and other religious activity in the cave, perhaps fearing that it will be appropriated as a place of worship and the locals will lose control of the site. One particular group had reportedly intended on using it for a prayer service on August 10-11.
“The resolution taken not to allow the Mawjymbuin cave to be used as a place of worship is fully endorsed by each one of us and also the party,” Shangpliang, of the National People’s Party, said.
Stating that the cave, a renowned tourist attraction, has been a part of Meghalaya’s tourist map for a long time, drawing visitors worldwide, he said the government has invested significantly in developing infrastructure and providing basic amenities for tourists, contributing to the local economy and sustaining the villagers’ livelihood.
“This has not only facilitated in creating this destination to be a famous one but also helped the people of Mawsynram in earning their livelihood. Therefore, we are proud there are two important caves in and around Mawsynram, Mawjymbuin cave and Krem Puri, which is also considered to be the longest (sandstone) cave,” he added.
Mawsynram is also famed for being the wettest inhabited place in the world and the ex-MLA said that villagers are keen on developing tourism further and do not want to see one of their natural attractions be lost as a place of worship.
Shangpliang stressed that the sentiments of the villagers should be respected and their decision to maintain the cave as a tourist attraction should be supported.
