Landslide and waterlogging along two National Highways passing through Meghalaya, in East Jaiñtia Hills and Ri Bhoi districts, have affected commuters and residents.
The continuous downpour has caused a massive landslide at Kuliang along National Highway 6 bringing vehicular movement to a grinding halt. The huge landslide occurred last night, stranding several vehicles, including passenger transports, along the highway.
However, the issue was promptly addressed by the NHAI, which deployed machinery to clear the road.
Notably, the deplorable road condition along the NH 6 continues to remain in a dilapidated state, especially during the monsoon season. The highway poses risk of accidents with numerous potholes and craters in areas like Narpuh.
Heavy rain also triggered flashflood blocking the Shillong-Guwahati highway causing chaos to commuters, shopkeepers, residents and students.
Few light vehicles became immobile due to the floodwaters, unable to travel either forward or backwards in the central parts of Nongpoh, Bethany Hospital Nongpoh, Pahamsyiem and Downgate area in Nongpoh.
People have expressed concern over the recurrent issue because of lack of drains on the side of the highway. The issue has often been raised with the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) but with little consequence.
