A night super bus overturned on National Highway 6 near Umling in Ri-Bhoi at around 7:30am, leaving several passengers injured.
The bus (ML 05L 8998) was heading towards Guwahati from Ladrymbai when the incident took place. The injured passengers were taken to Bethany Hospital and Nongpoh Civil Hospital for medical treatment.
The driver of the bus fled the scene immediately after the accident before the police arrived.
According to statements from the passengers, the accident occurred due to excessive speed and reckless driving. According to them, the driver lost control of the vehicle while negotiating a slight left curve. As a result, the bus veered off, crashed through the centre divider and overturned onto the opposite lane, completely blocking the Guwahati to Shillong lane.
All necessary legal and accident formalities were completed at the scene and the bus was towed to clear the blocked traffic. A list of passengers and those injured is still being updated.
