Search and rescue operations to find two more missing persons who were swept away by the Tihiang River continue on Thursday amid inclement weather.
South West Khasi Hills SP Maxwell B Syiem said the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and the Mawkyrwat Fire & Emergency Service are stationed at the site with the help locals of the area to find Ferdinand Myrthong (45) and Lapynshai L Mawlot (13).
Out of the six persons who were swept away by the strong currents of the river, the combined rescue team managed to recover four till Wednesday.
Eight people had travelling in a jeep from Mawjai village in Warsan Lyngdoh area to Mawkyrwat on Tuesday. Two managed to swim away to safety but the others which included a one year old baby did not survive.
The tragic incident was brought about when the jeep they were travelling in had to drive across through the river as parts of the bridge was recently washed away by the river.
Meanwhile, Ranikor MLA Pius Marweiñ and UDP district president GG Bung Snaitang visited Mawjai village and expressed condolences and sympathy to the families.
The Mawjai dorbar shnong also thanked the rescue team from Shillong and Mawkyrwat who are there to perform their duty amid inclement weather.
