The student community in Garo Hills refused to believe the state government’s explanation about failure in payment of scholarship funds and has decided to hold a rally on December 13.
The State government through the Chief Minister’s Office had yesterday stated that 3,868 students are yet to receive money under the pre-matric and post-matric scholarship funds due to non compliance of KYC, account change, account mismatched and beneficiary migration from minor to major were reasons for unsuccessful payment of the scholarship.
Greneth M Sangma, president of the Constitutional Rights Forum said the students had verified from banks and that the government is lying. He said the government should have instead issued cheques.
He informed that the students and NGOs will hold the rally from Tura Government College to the premises of the Deputy Commissioner’s office.
It may be mentioned, under the pre-matric scholarship, payment was made to 2,518 students out of 2,673 and 54,733 out of 58,443 students under the post matric scholarship. The government said payment failures can be corrected only by individual beneficiaries.
