The education sector requires complete dedication of efforts to improve the quality of learning being imparted in Meghalaya, Speaker of the Assembly, Metbah Lyngdoh, said today.
Lyngdoh was speaking during the closing ceremony of the 175th anniversary of the Cherra Presbyterian Secondary School and Sohra Presbytery.
The Speaker, who studied up to the pre-university level, said that students, parents and teachers should take joint responsibility to increase educational quality.
Lyngdoh also urged the school management to lay utmost emphasis on character formation of the students and to instil pride in the students for their cultural heritage and civilisation.
Cherra Presbyterian Secondary School is one of the oldest schools in Meghalaya and has had an enviable list of alumni.
“I was impressed to know that former Deputy Speaker of the Lok Sabha, the late GG Swell, two former CMs – the late BB Lyngdoh and late Donkupar Roy – the first MLA from Sohra, SP Swer, and many others are alumni of the school,” Lyngdoh said, adding that it deserves to be upgrade to a higher secondary institute.
Stressing on the quality of education, he added, “Schools should not only produce students but quality students so that the students can bring laurels to the school and the state”.
Quoting Swami Vivekananda, Lyngdoh said, “We want the education by which character is formed, strength of mind is increased, the intellect is expanded, and by which one can stand on one’s own feet.”
Meanwhile, KHADC Chief Executive Member and local MDC Titosstarwell Chyne also emphasised the need to upgrade the school and promised Rs 20 lakh from the MDC scheme to improve the school’s infrastructure.
