In an effort to reduce accidents and promote road safety, traffic personnel from Nongpoh police station conducted an awareness drive along National Highway 6 today, targeting truck drivers and other road users.
According to B Thangkhiew, a traffic officer at Nongpoh, NH-6 in Ri-Bhoi has witnessed numerous accidents, resulting in loss of lives and property damage. The primary cause of these incidents, he stated, is the failure of drivers to follow traffic rules, especially overtaking from the wrong side.
The awareness drive focused on the importance of lane discipline, emphasising that vehicles must adhere to designated lanes to prevent accidents. Thangkhiew explained that trucks traveling from Shillong to Guwahati should use the left lane, while smaller vehicles should use the right lane. Conversely, trucks traveling from Guwahati to Shillong should use the right lane, and smaller vehicles should use the left lane.
