Election officials in Doldengagre seized nearly Rs 1.75 lakh in cash from three BJP members last night.
Villagers apprehended the trio and two others, with the matter being reported to the authorities by an NPP volunteer. They were accused of distributing money ahead of today’s election.
Doldengagre falls within Dalu Assembly constituency in West Garo Hills.
Two of those detained – Dalseng Momin and Sengbath Marak – are not BJP members and were released along with the Rs 32,000 in cash that Momin had in his possession. Momin, however, had received injuries at the hand of the mob of villagers who detained him and required medical treatment.
The other three who were caught by villagers – Dikan Marak, Jepan Marak and Kambe Marak, were found to have Rs 1,74,360 in hand while travelling in an Assam-registered Bolero (AS 03 M 2900). The cash was seized and taken to the Treasury Office by the officials as it was related to the election.
