Shillong, Oct 20: A sweet shop inside the NEHU campus was gutted in a morning fire on Tuesday.
The fire broke out at Plate Mate Mithas between 10:45 and 11 am when staff were arranging sweets for the day. The shop, owned by Ashok Nandy and managed by his brother Anuj Nandy, is made mostly of wood and the flames spread rapidly.
“We tried with the fire extinguisher but the wood caught fire quickly. There was no gas being used, we were just arranging sweets and there were no customers,” Anuj Nandy said.
Fire tenders from Bara Bazar and Mawlai Nongkwar rushed to the spot and brought the blaze under control. Police from Mawkynroh are investigating the cause.
The owner said the loss is estimated at over Rs 20 lakh. The exact damage is being assessed.
