Shillong, Nov 12: The Rongjeng regional unit of the A·chik Holistic Awakening Movement (AHAM) has written to Tura MP Saleng A Sangma to complain about the non-functioning of projects under the central Jal Jeevan Mission implemented in the Rongjeng area.
The JJM is meant to provide piped potable water to unconnected villages. However, while Meghalaya often scores highly in JJM rankings, the situation on the ground appears to be very different in places.
The dream of water direct to the home “remains unfulfilled in many villages,” AHAM told the MP. “The construction of the JJM schemes, including the water tanks and pipeline connectivity, is incomplete in almost every village. The work that has been done is often substandard quality.”
The pressure group said that “many” JJM projects remain half-finished and unusable. “This incomplete connectivity is a critical issue that requires immediate attention. We have made multiple complaints regarding these unfinished projects but we have not seen any rectification or effort to complete the work from either the contractor or the PHE (Public Health Engineering) Department. This failure affects all the villages that were supposed to be the beneficiaries of this scheme,” AHAM added while asking Sangma to get involved by seeking answers on the people’s behalf of the state government. .
