The two newly elected Lok Sabha MPs from Meghalaya, Ricky Andrew J. Syngkon and Saleng A. Sangma will take their oath later this month.
The first session of the 18th Lok Sabha will start from June 24 for oath or affirmation of newly elected members.
During the first three days of the session, the newly-elected leaders will take their oaths or affirm their membership in the Lok Sabha. This will be followed by the election of the Speaker of the House.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Union Minister of Parliamentary Affairs Kiren Rijiju said, “First session of 18th Lok Sabha is being summoned from June 24 to July 3 for oath/affirmation of newly elected Members, Election of Speaker, President’s Address and discussion thereon. The 264th Session of Rajya Sabha will commence on June 27 and conclude on July 3.”
On June 27, President Droupadi Murmu will address a joint session of the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha.
It may be mentioned that Syngkon of the VPP was elected as the Lok Sabha MP from Shillong seat while Sangma of Congress was elected from the Tura seat.
Sangma by virtue of being a Congress MP will be sitting in the opposition bench along with other MPs of the INDIA bloc.
However, Syngkon who will also be sitting in the opposition bench will not be part of the INDIA bloc since the VPP has not joined the bloc.
Recently, VPP president Ardent M. Basaiawmoit had said that the VPP would give issue-based support to the INDIA bloc in parliament.
It may be mentioned that the two new MPs from Meghalaya defeated the sitting MPs by a huge margin.
While Syngkon, a professor of commerce at North Eastern Hill University (NEHU), defeated three-time MP from Shillong seat Vincent Pala in the Lok Sabha polls by a thumping margin of more than 3.71 lakh votes, Sangma won against sitting MP of Tura Agatha Sangma by a margin of over 1.55 lakh.
