Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma today received a warm welcome from the people of Pahamjula village, which only recently had its electricity supply restored after 18 years.
The remote village of 77 households, under Jirang constituency, had been in darkness since a transformer broke down in 2007.
The CM’s visit came in response to public appeals from the villagers. He was accompanied by local MLA Sosthenes Sohtun along with officials from various government departments. This was the first time a Chief Minister had set foot in the village.
The villagers expressed heartfelt gratitude to Sangma for his prompt action in restoring Pahamjula’s power supply. It was only last Friday that they had met with the CM and the transformer was repaired just days later.
This visit was also part of the ‘CM Connect Impact’ initiative, a state government programme aimed at ensuring development reaches even the most remote villages.
Speaking during the visit, Sangma emphasised the government’s commitment to listening to the voices of the people and addressing their grievances, whether in urban centres or the most far-flung villages of Meghalaya.
Sangma also made his maiden visit to Nonspung A village under Jirang to interact with the people and inspect the dilapidated Nongspung A Garo L.P School that has served the community since 1976.
He said the government will create new infrastructure for the school through the Chief Minister’s Special Rural Development Fund in convergence with other schemes.
Sangma also distributed a guitar and some footballs to the school children to encourage extra curricular activities.
