The A’chik Youth Council (AYC) has written to the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) to request that current allotments of shops in GHADC markets and haats be cancelled and fresh allocations be made.
The AYC said that “most” of the allotments for permanent shops have been conducted by the respective market committees but the pressure group wants the GHADC, which holds the authority over them, to do so.
“These actions by the market committees are illegal and undermine the jurisdiction of the GHADC,” the AYC said. “Consequently, many shop owners are occupying these lands and conducting their businesses without contributing any revenue to the GHADC. This situation results in a significant loss of potential revenue for the council.”
