Reforms in the school and higher education system from the perspective of National Education Policy will be among the many tasks that the newly established Meghalaya State Education Commission will delve into and give suggestions.
It may be noted that the State government has today notified the setting up of the State Education Commission with Prof. Sherwin May Sungoh of the Department of Education, NEHU as the chairman.
The commission has two advisers. They include former Union Public Service Commission chairman David Reid Syiemlieh (Adviser, Academic) and former Meghalaya Board of School Education chairman Tony Travert C. Marak (Adviser, School Sector Reforms).
There are 12 co-opted members in the commission and these include assistant professors, associate professors of different colleges, school principals, leading school teachers and former school teachers. State Education Secretary Ambrose Ch Marak is the member secretary of the commission.
The terms of reference of the State Education Commission is to advise the government on matters related to the school and college system, salary and school/colleges structures, school management functioning and accountability.
It would also recommend concrete solutions and strategic intervention and policy decisions for ushering reforms in the school and higher education system from the perspective of National Education Policy 2020 and fulfilling its various principles and articulation besides recommending reforms and policy changes for promoting quality education in schools, colleges and institutions of higher and technical education.
The commission would look into all the major issues that are impacting the education sector in Meghalaya on matters relating to management of aided schools and colleges, their performance concerning general administrative functioning, and operation and accountability of school managing committees (SMCs).
