Shillong, May 6: The Shillong Traffic Police (STP) has heightened its efforts to ensure safe roads for both motorists and pedestrians. Through thorough enforcement drives spread across various locations in the city, the STP aims to combat violations that endanger public safety.
One key focus of these enforcement actions is the crackdown on vehicles equipped with loud exhaust pipes and non-standard number plates.
The STP has emphasised that modified or illegal exhaust systems not only contribute to noise pollution but also constitute a violation of the Motor Vehicles Act of 1988. Offenders risk fines up to ₹5,000, along with the seizure and removal of illegal modifications.
In a social media post the STP warns, “Your exhaust should move the vehicle — not disturb the entire neighbourhood.”
In addition to noise regulations, the STP is also keeping an eye on the use of fancy number plates. Vehicles adorned with stylish, non-compliant number plates are also subject to penalties, as they hinder clear identification.
According to the STP, standard fonts, sizes, and formats must be adhered to, as outlined in the Central Motor Vehicle Rules. The regulation stipulates that High Security Registration Plates (HSRPs) have been mandatory for vehicles since April 2019.
“Number plates are meant for clear identification, not personalisation,” it said.
