The Meghalaya Aero and Adventure Sports Association (MAASA) will host an open paragliding championship and Asian League Qualification from December 7 to 10 at Madan Rapleng, near Laitlum.
The area around Laitlum is famous for its canyons and cliffs, which give the area some real paragliding possibilities.
MAASA president Desmond Nongkhlaw informed at a press conference today that more than 100 participants from across the country will participate at the competition along with some from Nepal, Indonesia and Korea.
Vice-president of the Fédération Aéronautique International India, Raju Rai, said that through the competition the Indian paragliders will also be chosen for the Asian League that will be held in Thailand next year.
Rai said that champinion Jafro Megawanto of Indonesia will also participate at the event.
Informing that a fund of Rs 5 lakh has been received from the state government for the event, Nongkhlaw said that the association is also training youths sponsored by the skill development department and over 30 students are training at Rapleng. It is expected that they will be ready to go for competitions in about two or three years.
