Nominations for the upcoming elections to the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) and the Jaintia Hills Autonomous District Council (JHADC) officially began today.
Fantin J Lakadong, the National People’s Party (NPP) candidate and sitting MDC for the Laitumkhrah-Malki constituency, was the first candidate to file his nomination for the KHADC elections. Accompanied by his wife, Ampareen Lyngdoh, who is the incumbent MLA of East Shillong, Lakadong filed his nomination at the ISBT at Mawlai Mawiong.
After filing his nomination, Lakadong spoke to reporters, dismissing concerns about potential anti-incumbency against the ruling NPP.
He stated that the NPP-led executive committee in the KHADC accomplished a great deal during its term, having worked closely with the District Council Affairs Department of the state government and Governor’s Secretariat to ensure that several pending bills passed by the council became law.
Meanwhile, Lakadong also expressed his intention to make the Khasi language compulsory in primary education if he is reelected.
Additionally, OS Jyrwa, an independent candidate from the Sohryngkham constituency, and Daniel Wahlang from Mawsynram constituency, also filed their nominations on the opening day.
