The sixth edition of the Meghalaya Games reached its culmination today in Jowai, with East Khasi Hills crowned the overall champions with 381 medals over the week-long event, including 149 gold.
Present at the closing ceremony held at U Kiang Nangbah stadium were Deputy Chief Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar, Jowai MLA Wailadmiki Shylla, senior civil servants and Meghalaya State Olympic Association (MSOA) officials.
Overall champions EKH ended with a medal tally of 149 gold, 105 silver and 127 bronze. West Jaintia were in second place with 108 medals while Ri Bhoi came third with 104 medals.
With 3500 athletes, the highest till date in the history of the state games, there were 29 sporting events including four demonstration sports is also the highest number of disciplines seen at the Meghalaya Games. For the first time, seven para-athletes took part in the Meghalaya Games expressing their grit and determination.
“We’re proud to say we’re fit to host the National Games,” the deputy chief minister said. He added that the Sports Department has seen significant growth under the MDA government, with increased budget and infrastructure development. The construction of the Mawkhanu football stadium, set to be India’s largest, will make Meghalaya the soccer capital of India, he stated.
MSOA President John F Kharshiing highlighted the progress made by the Meghalaya Games, which have grown from featuring 14 sports disciplines in 2020 to 23 disciplines in 2024, and now 25 disciplines plus 4 demo sports in 2025.
Kharshiing emphasised that the medal winners at the 6th Meghalaya Games would be eligible for sports scholarships and cash prizes.
