NPP leader and Education Minister Rakkam Sangma today said that since both the newly elected MPs from Shillong and Tura will be sitting in the opposition it is difficult to say whether they will be able to bring in development to the State.
He was reacting to the election of VPP’s Ricky A J Syngkon from Shillong seat and Saleng A. Sangma from Tura seat.
“Both the Shillong and Tura MPs will be sitting in the opposition. I don’t know if they will be able to bring in development. The challenge is also there,” Rakkam said.
He said that if the two MPs failed to deliver, they would be rejected by the same people who voted for them.
“I hope they will deliver as expected,” he added.
Stating that people have voted with high expectations, Rakkam said, “As leaders we have to understand if the MPs fail to deliver as expected, the same people might reject again tomorrow. So, therefore with all challenges, I also believe that these MPs will meet the expectations of the people of the State, be it ILP, language issue etc.”
Pointing out that there are many challenges and issues of the tribals and Christians, he said he believes that the two MPs will meet these challenges.
He said that unemployment is a massive challenge for the State and a lot of youth have voted with a lot of emotions.
Citing the example of political stalwart late Purno A. Sangma performance in the parliament, Rakkam said, “I expect Saleng to do dum dam in the parliament. We expect both Saleng and Syngkon to make the country listen to the voice of our people”.
