Even though Meghalaya is rock bottom in the Performance Grading Index (PGI) 2021-22 of the Union Ministry of Education, Education Minister Rakkam Sangma chose to see the positives today and highlighted the progress made in the state.
Speaking to reporters here today, Sangma said that Meghalaya’s PGI ranking has improved over the last three years, rising to Level 6 this year compared to Level 8 in 2017.
Kerala is widely known for its high levels of literacy and other educational performance indicators and the minister said that Meghalaya cannot possibly be on par with them overnight. Nevertheless, he referred to the Kerala score increasing from 901 to 928, while that of Meghalaya went up by a bigger margin, to 716 from 649.
“We are improving in comparison with a state like Kerala,” Sangma said.
Rankings are based on a number of parameters, such as accessibility, network and infrastructure. Two other North Eastern states – Mizoram and Arunachal Pradesh – were judged to be equally bad as Meghalaya and they were jointly the three poorest performers.
Meghalaya scored 420.6, while Mizoram and Arunachal Pradesh scored 453.4 and 458.5 respectively. Chandigarh and Punjab were the best performers in school education.
