Residents of Raid Madan Kyrdem continued their protest against the construction of a solid waste management facility at Mawlwai village in Ri-Bhoi.
The headman of Kyrdem and Acting Sirdar of Raid Madan Kyrdem had supposedly issued a no objection certificate (NOC) for the project without informing locals.
A public meeting was held at Kyrdem today wherein it was decided by the villagers to oppose the dump. The protest was also attended by opposition legislator George Lyngdoh, the loca MLA.
He denounced what he described as the state government’s silent action in setting up the project without taking him or the people on board. Villagers are against the dump site because they fear that it will turn into another Marten, the main landfill for Shillong, he added.
Residents also said that they fear that the Mawlwai garbage dump will end up contaminating their drinking water supply.
