The Hynñiewtrep Youths Council (HYC) has filed a complaint with the East Khasi Hills’ Superintendent of Police and the Meghalaya Human Rights Commission against George Dkhar, the second officer in charge of Pynursla police station.
HYC president Roy Kupar Synrem stated in the complaint that on the evening of February 24, HYC members from its Ri War Mihngi circle – local president Lamphrang Khonglam and six other members – apprehended two trucks carrying buffaloes meant for smuggling into Bangladesh.
Roy said that after apprehending these trucks, the HYC took them to Pynursla police station.
However, the police personnel on duty, the pressure group claims, led by Dkhar, instead of registering the complaint against smuggling, started to abuse the HYC members and dragged Khonglam inside the police station and started to physically assault him.
Dkhar also assaulted the other members of the HYC and threatened them with dire consequences for their act of apprehending these vehicles, Synrem claimed.
The HYC members were assaulted with lathis and had their personal belongings taken away.
The complaint includes medical reports and photographs of the injuries sustained at the hands of Dkhar.
“We demand that George Dkhar be prosecuted as per law and be investigated for his bad and illegal action. We also demand that immediate action be taken against him by putting him under suspension during inquiry/investigation,” Synrem added.
