Pressure groups in Purakhasia, West Garo Hills have written of suffering worse than usual power cuts.
Garo Hills, other than Tura, is supposed to have 10 hours of load shedding a day. However, Purakhasia sometimes sees its lights off for a whole afternoon or night and even for days on end, the complaint signed by three different NGOs said.
The problem seems to be a local one as, oftentimes, there will be electricity in nearby Dalu but not Purakhasia, it was claimed. Repairs to transmission lines can take several days as there appears to be a shortage of linemen posted to the area, the complaint added.
Needless to say, the situation is causing difficulties for students, business people and the general resident population, who are fearful of an increase in crime in the border region.
