The devastating floods that followed the cloudburst in Nagaland have left an unforgettable scar on Assam, particularly in Sivasagar, Jorhat, and parts of Golaghat. The floodwaters arrived suddenly, giving thousands of families little or no time to protect their homes, livestock, crops, or belongings. Entire villages were submerged within hours. Houses were washed away, roads disappeared, farmlands turned into rivers, and lives changed forever.
The human tragedy is heartbreaking. Many people have lost their lives, while countless others remain missing or displaced. Thousands of families are now homeless. Livestock, which represented years of savings and livelihood for rural households, has perished. Standing crops have been destroyed, small businesses have vanished, and the economic foundation of thousands of families has been wiped out.
During every major disaster, we witness the best side of humanity. Governments, disaster response teams, NGOs, volunteers, local communities, and many public figures come together to rescue people and provide immediate relief. Food packets, drinking water, clothes, medicines, temporary shelters, and rescue boats become the lifeline for those affected. The people of Assam have once again shown remarkable unity and compassion in helping their fellow citizens.
These relief efforts are essential and deserve appreciation. They save lives during the most difficult days of a disaster. However, we often forget that the greatest challenge begins after the floodwaters recede.
When the flood is no longer making headlines, thousands of families are left to face a painful reality. They return to find nothing but empty land where their homes once stood. Furniture, household items, documents, savings, farming equipment, and years of hard work have disappeared. What took decades to build has been destroyed within a few hours.
For many families, rebuilding is not simply a matter of repairing a damaged house. They must start their lives from zero.
Many affected families are already burdened with home loans, business loans, vehicle loans, or agricultural loans. Their sources of income have been destroyed, yet their financial obligations remain. Farmers have lost crops that represented an entire year’s investment. Shopkeepers have lost their inventories. Small business owners have watched their life’s work disappear in floodwaters. Daily wage earners have no workplaces to return to.
The economic impact of this disaster will continue long after the flood has ended. Without meaningful rehabilitation, many families may remain trapped in poverty for years. Children may be forced to leave school. Young people may migrate elsewhere in search of work. Small businesses may never reopen. Agricultural production may decline, affecting local food security and the rural economy.
This is why rehabilitation must become our highest priority.
Relief is temporary, but rehabilitation creates hope for the future.
The government should design comprehensive rehabilitation packages that go beyond immediate compensation. Financial assistance should be sufficient to help families rebuild permanent homes. Farmers should receive quality seeds, fertilizers, farming equipment, and support to resume cultivation. Small business owners should receive grants or interest-free financial assistance to restart their shops and enterprises.
Loan relief is equally important. Families who have lost everything should not continue carrying the same financial burden as before the disaster. Banks and financial institutions should consider restructuring loans, providing extended repayment periods, reducing interest rates, or, where appropriate, offering partial or complete loan waivers for the worst-affected families. These measures are not acts of charity; they are investments in restoring livelihoods and rebuilding local economies.
Schools, colleges, hospitals, marketplaces, roads, bridges, and tourism infrastructure must also be rebuilt quickly. Education should not stop because a disaster destroyed classrooms. Children deserve safe schools where they can continue learning without interruption. Markets should reopen so local businesses can recover. Roads and transport networks must be restored to reconnect isolated communities with essential services.
The tourism sector, especially in historically and culturally significant districts like Sivasagar, also deserves attention. Tourism supports thousands of livelihoods directly and indirectly. Restoring tourist infrastructure will help generate employment and revive the local economy.
The role of society should not end with donating food or clothes during the emergency phase. Individuals, companies, charitable organizations, educational institutions, and community groups can adopt villages, schools, or affected families and contribute to their long-term recovery. Donations for rebuilding homes, supporting education, providing livestock, purchasing farming tools, or helping entrepreneurs restart their businesses can have a lasting impact.
Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives can also play a major role in rebuilding schools, healthcare centres, drinking water systems, and community infrastructure. Universities, youth organizations, and volunteer groups can assist in rebuilding libraries, digital learning centres, and community facilities.
Natural disasters cannot always be prevented, but the suffering they cause can be reduced through collective responsibility and long-term planning. Recovery should not be measured by how quickly floodwaters disappear, but by how successfully affected families regain their dignity, livelihoods, and independence.
As public attention gradually shifts to other issues, we must not forget the people whose lives have been shattered. They do not need sympathy alone. They need opportunities to rebuild. They need support that continues long after the television cameras leave.
Today, I urge governments, NGOs, businesses, philanthropists, and every responsible citizen to stand with the flood-affected people of Sivasagar, Jorhat, Golaghat, and every other affected region of Assam. Let us help rebuild their homes, restore their farms, reopen their shops, revive tourism, strengthen schools, and restart local businesses. Let us ensure that no family is left alone in rebuilding their future.
The true measure of our compassion is not how much relief we provide during a disaster, but how committed we remain until every affected family can once again stand on its own feet. The flood may have washed away homes and livelihoods, but together, we can help rebuild hope.
