In another breakthrough in cases of bike theft, police of East Khasi Hills special cell and Sohra arrested five persons involved in the crimes and recovered three stolen bikes.
East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police Vivek Syiem said police have been pursuing with the gang for the past weeks.
In the first instance, two bike thieves identified as Babu Marak (19) of Dalia Shella and Sunday N. Sangma (30) Samanda, East Garo Hills were arrested from Sohra Rim along with a Suzuki Gixer bike bearing registration number ML05AD 4393 which was stolen from Smit.
Syiem said the bike was meant to be sold to receivers from Bangladesh. He said they had received the bike in Mawkdok from another group who are involved in lifting bikes from the city.
In a follow up operation, another three persons who were involved in umpteen number of bike cases were arrested from 7th Mile with a scooty, he said.
The persons are Barabor Namsaw (28), of Jirang, Banroilang Iawrod (19) of Kynbahmalai-Phlangwambroi in Mawsynram and Declin Warjri (20) of Nongmensong.
Syiem further said while continuing with the checking at Sohra, a rider with a R15 bike (ML05AA 3297) stolen from Mawiong Umjapung on February 23 was stopped at Nongsawlia. However, he abandoned the bike and escaped.
Meanwhile, two persons were apprehended by a special team of the Pasteur beat house police from Polo area.
Navin Sunar (42) of Laban and Sanju Sunar (38) of Barapathar were found in possession of suspected stolen laptops.
“They admitted to breaking into a house near BK Bajoria School, where they stole two laptops along with other items,” Syiem said.
Among the items recovered was a Kingdom of Bhutan Passport belonging to Jigyel Gyeltshen.
